Celebrities with legit Martial Arts skills

As you probably know, most of the Hollywood-movie fights are not very realistic. That made me think about doing a list of celebrities with legit Martial Arts skills. For the sole purpose of scaling down the actors and actresses who could probably fend for themselves in a realistic setting. So first I thought about including only actors, but then I decided to include other celebrities as well. Here it goes.

Chuck Norris

Chuck Norris is a famous Martial Artist and actor with real skills. Prior to his acting career, he participated in numerous Martial Arts tournaments. And has secured wins over people like Vic Moore and Skipper Mullins who are both multiple-time Karate world Champions. He holds black belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Judo, and Karate. Chuck has claimed that he once went to Rio and decided to do a training session with the Gracie family.

And as soon as they started to grapple he said it felt like he had never done a grappling-lesson his whole life, even though he was a Judo black belt at the time. He has since earned a 3rd-degree black belt in Jiu-jitsu and also helped the sport/discipline grow in America. I think it’s safe to say, that this is an old man you shouldn’t mess with!

Ed O’Neill (Al Bundy)

Ed O’Neill is mostly known as the bitter husband Al Bundy in the TV-show “Married… With children”. This may come as a surprise to many but he is actually a legit Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt under Rorion Gracie. Who is the son of the original founder Helio Gracie. He’s been training the discipline for 22 years.

So even though his boxing-stance on the picture above may look a little bit “off”. And that he may not be the first one you think of when you’re about to read an article about celebrities with legit Martial Arts skills. You would probably not wanna end up on the floor with this man!

Sean Connery

Yes, the former James Bond is not only a very talented actor, but he also holds a black belt in Kyokushin Karate. This is a very aggressive style of Karate used by countless MMA-fighters. As a matter of fact, he supposedly trained under Mas Oyama who is the founder of Kyokushin Karate. And while some claim this to be bullshit, there is actually some evidence such as pictures amongst others to support these claims.

While his black belt is supposed to be honorary I still believe it’s a pretty good feat to get it from the founder. There is even a story about Sean Connery breaking his trainers wrist in training, and the trainer became so upset that he broke Sean’s wrist back.

Jean-Claude Van Damme

As it turns out Jean-Claude is not just an action-hero on the big screen. He possesses a 2nd-degree black belt in Shotokan karate and has a long record in official fights, both amateur and professional. He started training Karate at the age of 12 and later compiled an amateur record of 44 wins and only 4 losses between 1976 and 1980.

Van Damme was a member of the Belgian Karate team when they won the European championship in 1979. And he also managed to earn a professional record of 18 wins and 1 loss, all wins coming by knockout. And even though he stopped competing in 1982 his skillset is still well-portrayed in most of his movies today. A list of celebrities with legit Martial Arts skills wouldn’t be complete without him!

Rikki Rockett

Yes Rikki Rockett, the drummer of Poison does possess some really legit skills in Martial-Arts. Apparently he got robbed at knifepoint in 1999 and thereby choose to pick up Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He trains under a well-known coach named Renato Magno. From whom he also has earned a 2nd-degree black belt from.

Surprise! Or maybe not so much. The famous TV-host, UFC commentator, comedian, and podcast-owner Joe Rogan is a really skilled Martial artist. He has trained and competed in different forms of Martial arts since childhood. And he also possesses black belts in Taekwondo, 10th planet Jiu-jitsu and BJJ.

His kicking skills are amazing, which has resulted in him teaching Georges St Pierre and other famous fighters his kicking techniques. Joe Rogan is probably the only one on this list who actually could have made it in the UFC if he wanted to. Well at least a couple of years back as he is getting old now.
